Prof. Peter Johnson studied piano and organ with Herbert Sumsion at Gloucester Cathedral, read music at Cambridge and took his doctorate from Oxford. At Birmingham Conservatoire he set up an innovative Honours degree programme for performers, and a thriving research department. Church posts have included Holy Trinity Coventry (1975-79) and St Martin’s Epsom (1985 – 90). For many years Peter directed an accomplished chamber choir, often exploring the lesser-known choral repertoire including pre-Reformation and newly composed choral music. They were regularly invited for residences at cathedrals including Canterbury, Worcester, Gloucester and Liverpool (both Anglican and Catholic) and Westminster Abbey. He has given organ recitals in many venues including Norwich Cathedral and, recently, Dore Abbey. He is married to the composer Liz Dilnot Johnson and lives in Colwall, and in 2017 directed her award-winning Colwall Requiem for Aleppo with local singers.
